Users of Apple’s classic 9,7“-iPad or the 9,7“ iPad Pro were able to use the Microsoft-apps like Word and Excel not only for viewing, but also for editing purposes. With the release of the 10,2“ iPad (7th generation) this is about to change: Users will need an Office 365-subscription if they want to continue editing their documents on the iPad.

Microsoft once set a specific screen size limit that defined if you need a commercial license or „just“ the app from the App Store. This limit was tailored to the extents of 10,1“ - the new iPad in the 7th generation exceeds this limit by 0,1“ so, according to Microsoft, you have to get a subscription if you want to use all features of the Office mobile apps on-the-go.

Somehow, Microsoft seems to define screen sizes under 10,1“ as devices for the private or personal use while bigger screens seem to be equal to commercial usage. This limit isn’t quite new and was already discussed with the release of the second iPad Pro with 10,5“ inches that broke up these boundaries for the first time.

This probably won’t affect you when you already have a subscription for your household or any business-Office 365-plan containing licenses for Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word. Anyone who hasn’t one so far and gets his hand on the new iPad for working purposes may realize that viewing the documents is possible while editing is not. The result: You need to get a subscription. This topic isn’t that new but gets heated up simply because of the bigger screen on the new entry-level iPad.

At the moment, an one-year Office 365 Home-subscription for five desktop/notebook-devices, five tablets and five mobile phones costs around 70 EUR so if you break it up on a per-head-base, you will definitely get value for money on all devices. Beware that this subscription is target on non-commercial use while the Office 365 Business Premium-subscriptions are the business-plans starting with an integrated Office-license per user!
